The Assessment Institute for Foods, Drugs And Cosmetics, the Indonesian Council of Ulama or Lembaga Pengkajian Pangan Obat obatan dan Kosmetika Majelis Ulama Indonesia (LPPOM MUI), was established by MUI on January 6, 1989, in response to the pork fat issue debacle which caused social unrest in the Muslim majority country.

It is now a credible Halal certification institution at both the national and international level. LPPOM MUI has cooperated with the National Agency for Drugs and Foods Control (BPOM), Ministry of Religious Affairs, Bogor University of Agriculture (IPB), Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Cooperative and Small Scale Industry in the process and implementing of halal certification.

Together with the National Agency for Drugs and Foods Control (BPOM), halal certification from MUI becomes a requirement in the labelling of halal products.
